Another Friggin LOCK!!!

Quinte West, Ontario              Port Trent Marina,                                     July 18-20, 2016
Wow! We just realized we hadn’t talked about our exhausting crossing from Kingston to Port Trent… It was a really pretty day as we started out and got more overcast as we traveled. The winds as we said last blog were against us the whole ride making it a bit longer than we expected.
The marina was by far the prettiest and best equipped of our travels so far…it was just completed a year ago. The building and grounds were so beautiful, but the town didn’t compare to the site. It was pretty small after Kingston and not very exceptional although the people were wonderful as always!
We ate aboard our boats for the first night. After a good night’s sleep, we got up to make use of the free laundry, and to cash in some of the coupons the marina gave us for places in town…We even had a free hotdog, soda and ice cream at the Marina’s cantina for lunch.
Mom had made reservations for 8 of us loopers at Tomasso’s, downtown so they all  walked there for dinner. It turned out to be excellent and they had a lot of fun! I’m going to enjoy the leftovers they brought back to me and them…

Campbellford, Ontario City Marina July 20 - 21, 2016

We were blessed with another beautiful day to start the Trent Severn Canal. Thankfully mom, dad and the others had agreed to only travel 31 miles today, but it included 12 locks, the last one a double one that we went from one lock to another. So far, no one knows how high up we have traveled in these 12 locks…pretty high! The last one was very impressive!!!
We had a couple long stretches were mom and I got to relax, but dad was driving and being the lead boat all day. Since our boat was the heaviest, we got to be the one tied to the lock walls and Lone Star rafted off us…We finally saw those devil ZEBRA MUSCLES…they did give me the creeps since they were so tiny and were taking over this one lock wall…The sites today were so pretty…farms, houses, cabins, kayakers, swimmers, fishermen, pontoon boats, play sites by the waters edge, lots of power plants and dams, and miles of just gorgeous lush forests…
The lock masters and their assistants we all so helpful and fun to talk too… Some of the lock master's buildings had been used for housing up until the 70's. They are beyond charming Cape Cod's with lots of flowers...the Canadians love their flowers!!! The lock masters and their assistants appreciated the chocolate we gave them.

Although here there is suppose to be the World’s Greatest Chocolate Outlet which we won’t make it to…Miranda who collected our money for docking was giving out samples. The guys are running to Dooher’s Bakery this AM since it’s suppose to have the World’s best Donuts…we will see!

Leap of Faith ended up docking across the river from us right next to where an outdoor concert started as we arrived…That perked us up a bit, but once other people helped us get tied up and everything connected…all mom, dad, Kevin and Steve wanted to do was have a cold beer/wine and unwind… We all had agreed we were trying to eat us some of our leftovers, so we didn’t venture far from the boat. I enjoyed some of their leftovers myself and I must say they were delicious!!! After M & D showered, it was lights out for all of us…

Waiting for our first lock to open, so we are tied up on the blue line

Our First Lock on the Trent Severn Canal

Coming into the locks

When you are rafted incorrectly with the heavier boat on the outside, it's a technique that works...use those legs!!!

One lock master is nicer than another...Love them all!

Leap of Faith on the Left, Why Not on the Right (not Loopers)

One of the newer lock master locations at Trenton where we entered the Canal system

Love the older Cape Cod style houses that actually use to house the lock masters up until the 70's

Here is what it looks like when you cram 4 boats in at one time

One of my better? self portraits??? LOL!

Lily has the hardest job of all, relaxing and gently accepting dog biscuits from the lock masters

Yes, most of these locks are manual

Love these smaller self made entertainment areas...I wanted to join them; especially with all their toys!!!

Even Lily got tired of all the attention and went back to sitting in front of the salon floor fan

We weren't sure what this sculptural grouping was all about?

Definitely a lot narrower in parts than the Erie Canal was

How charming is this site?

Another Cape Cod with a bit different design, but always flowers...love all the gardens and landscaping up here!!!

Some of the large canal traffic

WE had it down to a system by the end of the day

Finally, we were only bringing in our three looper boats together

One of the two double locks we have gone through...out of one into the other one. Crazy!

Can you tell where we are? They are so great about marking their channels too!

This photo doesn't begin to show how tired we all were! Except maybe ADD boy, Steve
Our view beside Moondance in Campbellford, Ontario as we listened to a live band across the canal...
