Marvelous Marathon, FL

It was pretty when we left Everglades City

May 21. 2017
OK, so know one asked me if I thought it was a good idea to cross to Marathon today???
OH MY GOSH!!! Other than the hour it took us to get back out to the Gulf and about an hour outside of Marathon were the conditions on the boat anyway close to smooth...
Otherwise, it was 3'-5'waves, 15 knot winds and waves off our bow at about 30 degrees...

It was like riding a horse at a trot or canter for app. 8 1/2 hours... Dad was able to slow us down once, so mom could go down to get supplies and use the facilities...Our poor dingy ended up on our swim platform again, thanks to all the wave action!

The good news is when we left before 7 AM, we saw dolphins playing, herons flying and dad even saw about a 3' sea turtle before he went under our boat. This constant action makes it hard for me to nap or settle;  but mom and dad are able to read their books when they aren't driving the boat. They put down the yoga mat on the flybridge, so we all had more traction; enabling us to move around up top since it was far cooler there than in the salon. It's always incredible to watch the water colors change with the depths, the sun and clouds...

Marathon from the water

Despite not being able to reach anyone at the Marathon Yacht Club, members came out of the woodwork to be helpful once we arrived. M & D cleaned up for the hotdog social tonight and the ultimate irony is they met Tony and Nancy Zimbicki who live a street away from us in Burnt Store Marina...They are picking us up tomorrow night for dinner...What an incredibly small world!!! I was so happy to nap while they were gone since I got little sleep on the ride over...despite, M & D making sure I was tucked by them the entire way...

We slept in and got up to overcast skies and gentle winds. Since we have been on Moondance for week, mom was ready to do major laundry: sheets, towels and such. Thankfully, they had lovely new commercial washer and dryers here making mom's job easier. Dad was determined to get all the salt and grease off the boat, so their compromise was going to eat at their favorite breakfast place first; but they missed their breakfast/dragon boat buddies: Walt and Betsy. It just wasn't the same without them!

When they returned the made me stay inside, while they thoroughly scrubbed the outside. I kept whining, but they ignored me. When mom couldn't help outside anymore and her laundry was done, she moved inside to vacuum up the salt and bottle broom tree specimens that had managed to come in...After about 2-3 hours, they let me out; gave me a treat and headed to the pool with their books and drinks...The sun was out and at first they had the pool to themselves... Mom really liked the pool's design since both ends had a shelf to sit on where you could read your book in the water...Brilliant!

Tony picked us up at 5:30 and took us back to their boat duplex on Key Colony, a tiny island town on the outskirts of Marathon. Sitting outside at their place was so lovely...there was such a terrific breeze that we didn't have to worry about bugs. Nancy fixed this yummy tequila marinated shrimp appetizers before we walked to the Key Colony Inn. I was really excited to see mom walk in with a big leftover box because it usually means I get some of it. They told me their meals were incredibly good and they enjoyed the piano player; especially when they moved further away so we could still talk.

As Usual Mom was doing something stupid!!!
When mom went to the bathroom prior to leaving she was adopted by an Indiana professor and her women buddies at the bar. They thought mom was channeling Stevie Nicks...
Hey, mom just rolls with it!!!

Tomorrow we are off to Key West, with reservations to go to the Dry Tortugas on the Yankee Freedom on Thursday. It won't be a perfectly calm day again. but we will traveling on the ICW to Hawk's Channel to Key West, so we should be fine since we will have following seas...

Our cute waiters T-shirt...
