Maryland's "Mayberry", Rock Hall, MD

Rock Hall, MD                                                 Rock Hall Landing Marina                                              June 16-18, 2016
It was another gloomy, gray, drizzly day as we backtracked our way past Annapolis. Our biggest excitement was passing under the twin Chesapeake Bay Bridges. Mom was nice enough to make me an egg this morning when she made egg muffins for them. YUM! Dad had the chance to catch up by cell with friends and family on this crossing which was a good thing. We arrived around 2 PM in this nicely protected marina. M & D borrowed the marina’s big bikes into town to pick up a few groceries… Including yummy new dog treats for ME!
“Rock Hall, the Pearl of the Chesapeake” has one blinking light and is about 4 blocks long. It has lots of marinas, boats, boat businesses, vacation condos, B & B's and restaurants… The people in town and on the docks couldn't be friendlier!!!

Sorry, we aren’t going to be here for their BIG August FESTIVAL, “Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend” It sounds like so much fun!!! They decorate dingys  and go out with squirt guns and have battles on their little bay…They storm the beach and lots of other wench and pirate silliness!!! Chris, the Dockmaster said once they open the marina on Jan. 2 of the New Year at 8:30 AM by 9:15 AM all their extra slips are rented…It has gotten really BIG for this tiny place! :-) Dad called this place, The Mayberry of Marinas…Not only did Chris come to help us, but 2 other guys volunteered as well…Nice People! Dad is thrilled to have a strong enough signal he will be able to watch the NBA game tonight! That is after M & D treat ourselves to another wonderful seafood dinner at the Waterman’s Crab House. I’m always hoping for leftovers!
Mom is hoping to take some photos tomorrow afternoon when the sun is suppose to come out…Otherwise, it looks like we will be hunkered down inside while the storms come through…Talking to the boaters who keep their boats here, we discovered that this location is ideal for getting anywhere on the Chesapeake Bay quickly.

We woke up to a wonderful surprise! The sun was shining and the storms had passed over us during the night. Mom and dad did some advance trip planning while watching the news.
Don’t know what got into mom, but she was in a domestic goddess mood. She created fancy omelets, baked fresh blueberry muffins, and actually ironed some of the laundry! WoW! Dad went out to talk to the guys on our dock and do a little fishing...
M & D used the marina’s bikes to go back to town to photograph and explore more. It turns out this town celebrated it’s 300th birthday in 2007. We went into an old post office building that was turned into one of the first pharmacy’s on the East Coast in 1872…They had saved much of the old furniture and fixtures! Fantastic!!! It’s now this charming ice cream and sandwich shop. The kids that worked there actually knew some of the history of the place and seemed proud of it, which mom and dad loved! Our dock neighbors including Ken Marks (a marine insurance agent who sponsors the Loop) invited us out with their group to go to Passages, a restaurant at another gorgeous marina here. Ken called the trolley (pulled by a small jeep) to come get us. The trolley is a great setup. It runs until midnight and only costs $1 per person to ride, so people can go from place to place or bar to bar without worry! Had there been room on the trolley I could have gone because it is very dog friendly! M & D seemed to really enjoy all the new people they met for dinner! Mom and Dad being older than this lively group retired earlier…

Saturday morning has broken beautifully! Shawn and Sue’s husband helped us shove off this AM which gave mom a big break!!! The waters are on Chesapeake Bay are like glass. It’s so clear that we can see Baltimore in the distance…

Today, we traverse the C & D Canal to go to Chesapeake City and leave the Chesapeake Bay behind of us for this trip. It’s been wonderful and we would love to come back and visit some of the rivers and inlets along here…

Mike talking to Shawn and Ken after walking Lily

Can't believe they actually saved so many items from this 1872 Pharmacy turned current day Ice Cream & Sandwich Store

It was like walking into a movie set

The phone still works but you can't make long distance calls

Reminds me of my youth

They still have penny, nickel  & dime candies

Truly a charming piece of history beautifully preserved

Needless to say, we had to have an ice cream, so we could talk to the darling young people working here.

They got these old desks from the school where Babe Ruth attended before it was torn down.

The outside of the old pharmacy

George Washington this way came more than once...

Our Friday night dinner place within walking distance of our dock

The town had added these darling tiny cottages for small business owners...they are still trying to fill them. Anyone interested?

Another view of the Ice Cream Store, they even paid homage to the original Pharmacist by keeping his name

This charming old store that had the dolls in the desks in the windows, but they carried clothes I haven't seen since Hawaii...cool!

Looking down the one block of the major business district

One of two crossroads downtown

We could sit on these swings while we waited for the trolley
