Beautiful Beaufort, SC, Tree City, Once Again

We all are so thrilled we stopped here…It has the most gorgeous Waterside Park ever!!! Loads of grass, flowers, benches and even wooden bench swings! So many shops & restaurants within walking distance it’s just incredible. M & D are scheduled to go on a carriage tour tomorrow morning…I get the distinct impression, I’ll be left home! Mom has started the Bartender photos…at least with the ones that don’t mind being photographed. Today’s at Q on Bay St. is Adam…Mom had the most incredible pear cider called Rock Bear….She would  love to find it again…incredibly refreshing!!! This restaurant also had the most interesting & delicious egg rolls, and sandwiches. Mom and Dad got take out and just brought it back to the boat. They both shared with me…I love them!!!

Got up and mom took me for a long walk on this beautiful waterfront park, afterwards, they went for their breakfast and a Beaufort City Carriage Tour. They came back around noon to take me out, give me a treat & figure out our next few days marinas. It’s getting busier; so marinas are harder to book. We leave tomorrow for Charlestown for a night, Georgetown for two and then off to Myrtle Beach to catch up with Steve and Cindy and lay low if storms do come in? M & D really enjoyed seeing the city again and listening to some more history.

Trivia time again; we didn’t remember that they put into effect a Federal Law prohibiting the importing of slave after 1808. One downtown church was used for a Union hospital including using some of the gravestone for operation tables. A couple markers still have saw marks on them? Headstones weren’t put back where they were suppose to be, but for artistic appeal? Imperial entrance stairs go by a funny local name, but neither M & D can remember what they are called? (Men went up one stairs one side and women the other side, so men couldn't see the women's ankles) Oh Lordy!!!
They have a downtown arsenal that was used more by the Union troops than the Confederates. The rich Beaufort citiizens got the Heck out of town during the Civil War in a move called the “Great Skedaddle” or as they like to say down here, ”Welcome to Beaufort! In their best Southern Hospitality Draw!” It’s one of the reasons so many of the gorgeous homes remained intact and weren’t destroyed! Although they were sold off during & after the war…Most of these fantastic homes were built by rich plantation owners for their SUMMER homes to escape the diseases on their plantations; cholera, yellow fever and such…more breezes here on the river. They were again very rich from that Sea Island Cotton!!!
Many of the slaves were from Western Africa, which had been colonized by the British. So some slaves could speak, a form of pidgin English. M & D really enjoyed walking the town after the carriage ride and talking to locals and transplants alike. We ate dinner on the boat since Mom had put in pork chops in the slow cooker before she left…Love these leftovers!!!
Photos to follow when this site is cooperating...

Our view as we walked down our dock

Just one of the magnificent homes left from the plantation owners summer residences

One lovely church after another, most very, very old

Here's the graveyard where so many of the stones got used for surgical tables and not replaced to their original sites

Again, whenever we see reflections both Mike or I try to capture it

Even in downtown Beaufort, the marshes are everywhere

Max is one of their newer Percherons

One of the first mansions you see from the waterfront

Part of the what they call the Rainbow street due to the brightly painted houses

Just one corner of the Arsenal

Some cities like Cincy have" Flying Pigs", Beaufort has "Mermaids"

Here's the Rainbow Street

Wish I could remember their funny name for this type of staircase entrance

These are all photos of the Castle that is still owned by a single family.

The waterfront area was just incredible!!! Those funny looking structures behind the shrubbery are wooden swings!!!

The horses are really well cared for
