Unexpected Treasure, Fernandina Beach, FL

A number of our fellow cruisers left about the same time we did today…It seems this part of FL isn’t so inhabited and it’s very, very flat…At some points we can see the channel and boats winding way ahead of us…It’s so green, lush and elegantly beautiful with tall delta grasses, gorgeous birds, cypress and palm trees all gently moving… Occasionally we see tall houses tucked way back into the tree line. Thankfully, many areas are wildlife sanctuaries or parks. Then, out of no where a bridge appears and more civilization with it. Listening to the Pandora Bob Dylan channel seems appropriate here…I couldn’t be more relaxed if I tried…
Not liking those big horse flies as we got closer to Fernandina Island. YUCK!!! May have to put up the screens when we get in if they keep coming…Dad is really earning his money today!!! Not as many places where you are safe to use auto pilot…too many tidal marshes and eddies!
Arrived around 3 PM to a real strong tide and wind, so we didn’t have much choice which way we were docking the boat. The good news is we still did the 70 miles in 7 hours. Not having issues with the horse flies here. instead it’s sand gnats driving us crazy…Thankfully, our Thermacell seems to be keeping them out of Moondance! What a darling town complete with a train going by… Hopefully, not too late???
We were able to enjoy after dinner drinks and watch the sunset on the boat bow while we talked to people passing by...

Can’t wait to use our bikes and explore it more tomorrow…That is after breakfast and cab ride to get groceries…Can’t believe we have been on Moondance for 3 weeks this Monday!!! WOW!

Some of the lush scenery along the way...

It was like seeing a modern day Tara

As we got close to these boat yards, the US Coast Guard were out in Force

A gorgeous old house in Fernandina Beach Downtown

The 1880's Fernandina Beach Courthouse that is still being used as such.

The downtown is so charming...

Tiny Train Station that is still active...
Had to take this photo for Valerie Harding...
